Baddeck, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada

I used to live in Halifax, Nova Scotia and we spent many a holiday in a place called Baddeck, on the island, named Cape Breton. It was a beautiful place with amazing views, and the property we used to rent was right on the lake itself with the dock and really what was a shed or shack with a view. It had the most beautiful view imaginable, but really was a worn out old shack that was actually quite small inside and one bedroom and a sofa that converted into another bed which is great for the kids.

It was an amazing place if you have a boat because of the dock, you’ve got the boat every day to use or go across to the island which is just across a small amount of water and a beautiful Lighthouse which you could see through the windows of the shed. A great holiday home, that could be improved by basically knocking it down and rebuilding, most important part of the rebuild would be to ensure you had an amazing view, because the view was fantastic it was a case of how you can make the most of it in a new building.

The size of the building on the property would not matter that much so long as there was a view from every room, which was possible because of the view from three sides of the small plot, important thing was having access to the outside and an amazing deck so the glazing and windows as part of the new property will be very important.

I think it is quite simple to buy a ready-made pre-built wooden structure which often look very nice, the key for me would be to make sure that there was a panoramic view as often in Baddeck the weather would change and would rain and be very wet therefore you do you spend time inside and the view of the outside becomes even more important when you’re stuck inside.

So having a local glazier and possibly a local carpenter who would be happy to work with the new design will be very important, because the whole point of a property in Baddeck is the view of the lake and the mountains and the amazing Canadian scenery. I have a good friend who is a very good glazier and I have asked he’s view of what could be done on a small plot of land and he has  some great ideas, that would work. Guess I have to get the land first…..
